Smart phones, tablets and other handheld devices have been widely used worldwide these days. Coupling these with many other “things” such as vehicles, machines, sensors and appliances, human users and the “Internet of Things” will place huge demands for mobile and wireless communication and computing services, which in turn will render the current 3G/4G cellular and WiFi networks inadequate in the very near future. To meet these demands, future 5G wireless networks with heterogeneous air interfaces (including advanced IEEE 802.11x and antenna and networking techniques), small or ultra-dense cells and software defined capabilities are being investigated, prototyped and tested at industrial and academic research laboratories. Despite such intense efforts, many technical challenges and issues remain.
To reflect recent research advances, this Area is soliciting original contributions in, but not limited to, the following topics.
