PhD Workshop “Modelling Communication Networks” at ITC 30, 2018
Although the access to advanced simulation, emulation and even experimentation facilities is currently much easier than some decades ago, the scientific community should not overlook the clear need to develop appropriate modeling skills. This is of utter relevance for early-stage researchers and PhD candidates, who shall be able to corroborate their more-practical results onto appropriate models. ITC has been, since its origin, a reference for those interested in modeling of communications networks. Although it started with a focus on teletraffic theory, it now spans to any networking feature, as can be seen in the four focus areas below, and we thus believe that it provides a perfect environment to strengthen and broaden this modeling effort from PhD students.
By being a major conference, attended by reputable experts in the aforementioned areas, ITC offers a unique opportunity for PhD students. They will be able to learn from the sessions of the main track, as well as to present and discuss their PhD ideas and progress during a dedicated PhD workshop on the last day of the conference. The ITC 30 PhD workshop aims at providing an international forum for PhD students exploring this rapidly evolving domain of communication networks with a variety of modeling approaches.
ITC is an outstanding conference, focusing on scientific approaches, modelling and evaluation of teletraffic topics, this year on the following four areas.
Area 1: Performance Evaluation, Control and Optimization
Area 2: Network Measurements and Big Data
Area 3: Networking Architectures and Paradigms
Area 4: Wireless and Cellular Networks
These areas will also be reflected and topics of the PhD workshop offering an entry point to the ITC Conference and Community. We want to include an additional track track, where PhD students can present initial ideas and problem statement, where the right modelling and methods are not clear or confirmed yet. These can be discussed to identify good scientific solutions and approaches. Also further support from senior researchers as additional advisors of the PhD can be obtained.
In all tracks intensive discussion with the PhD students presenting the paper are planned. All Chairs will be present at the workshop to give intensive feedback, a joint dinner in the evening is planned to further discuss on the PhD topics.
Information for Authors
Authors should submit a PDF (Portable Document Format) version of their manuscripts for review. Submitted papers must be written in English, using the standard IEEE 2-column, A4 size style for conference papers with a length limitation of 6 pages. Papers exceeding the page limit may be rejected without further review. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the workshop at the full (member or non-member) rate and be present at the workshop to present the paper. Accepted and presented papers will be published in the ITC 30 conference proceedings and submitted to IEEE Xplore as well as other Abstracting and Indexing A&I) databases.

Andreas is Full Professor and directs the Institute of Communication Networks at Hamburg University of Technology. Further, he is the university's Vice President for Research. He received his Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degree from the University of Bremen.
