We are planning to publish extended versions of selected papers in a
special issue of Computer Networks, The International Journal of Computer and Telecommunications Networking. Authors of selected papers will be invited to contribute to the special issue. Papers are submitted to the special issue through an open call which can be found below.
Call for Papers
The evolution of communications and networking is changing the world we are living in by reducing response time and increasing throughput for existing and new applications. To this end, network and service operators are introducing new forms of softwarization and caching to meet the more stringent application, user and content demands. Communication networks and the associated infrastructure are facing new paradigms like Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV), while caching networks like content delivery networks (CDN) or information-centric networking (ICN) architectures aim at providing Quality of Service and Quality of Experience. The question arises as to what the overall impact is on the ever-increasing speed, scalability, and flexibility of new communication technologies, networks, user devices, and applications, and the ever-changing operational challenges arising from these developments.
The scope of this Special Issue of Computer Networks addresses the latest advances and challenges in design, modelling, measurement, and performance evaluation of softwarization and caching in next generation networks (NGN). Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
List of Topics
Performance modeling and analysis of softwarization and virtualization in the NGN
Performance and scalability of SDN and NFV solutions
Network service provisioning and traffic engineering in virtualized environments
Performance evaluation of cache networks: Content Delivery Networks or Information Centric Networking architectures
Caching, content encryption and privacy
Cache placement, replication strategies, cache replacement algorithms in NGN
Caching in 5G wireless networks
Methodologies for performance evaluation of caching and large-scale cache networks
Dependability and performance related issues
Simulation methods and tools for NGN
Traffic and performance monitoring in NGN

Instructions for Submission
Submissions will be judged based on their originality, novelty, and quality. Submissions must not substantially overlap with papers that have been previously published or are currently submitted for publication. The submission must be clearly written and in excellent English, with a maximum page limit of 20 pages (single column style, see https://www.elsevier.com/authors/author-schemas/latex-instructions ).
All received submissions within the scope of the issue will be sent out for peer review by three experts in the field and will be evaluated with respect to the relevance to this special issue, level of innovation, depth of contribution, and quality of presentation. Author guidelines for preparation of manuscript can be found at http://ees.elsevier.com/comnet/
Manuscripts should be submitted on line through http://ees.elsevier.com/comnet/ and "SI:Softwarization" selected as the article type.
